Through Inspired Learning We Achieve Our Dreams

A A A

We Are Cherry!

What is my child going to learn about this term?

We have sent home a copy of the learning we have planned for your child this term. On this sheet you should find an explanation of what will be covered for each area of the national curriculum. You will also find aspects we describe as ‘memorable experiences’. These are the elements that will bring the learning to life for the children. You will also see an ‘end product’ section. Here we describe what the children are working towards; this could be a display, performance or a piece of writing. We believe this helps to give the children a focus or reason for learning the information.

We hope that this information, coupled with the class newsletters and the planners will give you a deeper understanding of the year your child is going to have in school. It might also give you some ideas for how you can best support them.

Our Fair Trade Movie!

We all contributed to a whole school movie, which was shown at a special movie night screening on Monday 20th March, showcasing our Fair Trade Fortnight learning.

We hope you enjoy watching our chapter from the movie!

Chicks!

We have loved caring for our 6 little chicks! The children took great care of them and were so gentle when they came out to play. We were sad to see them go!

Fairtrade Fortnight!

We really enjoyed finding out more about Fair Trade during our 'Fairtrade Fortnight' event. We investigated how our food grows (under the ground, on a plant, on a tree etc) and where in the world it comes from. We researched which products were Fairtrade and how the Fairtrade Foundation improved the lives of the farmers it supported. Our learning was enhanced by visitors from The Body Shop and the Good Taste Fairtrade Shop who brought a selection of products to show us.

Fair Trade!

We had a great time learning all about Fair trade during 'Fairtrade Fortnight!' We learnt about how our food grows (in the ground, on a plant, on a tree etc), where in the world it comes from and how it gets to us. We investigated which products carry the Fairtrade logo and how the Fairtrade Foundation helps the lives and working practices of it's farmers. We became very passionate about Fair Trade!

World Book Day!

We had a great time celebrating World Book Day! The children came dressed as their favourite book characters and we had a special visitor in the form of 'Alec Williams', a storyteller who made us laugh so much with his stories! At the end of the day, the teachers changed around classes to share their favourite stories with the children!

Growing!

Our new topic is 'Growing'.

This topic looks set to be super exiting and we have already had some special visitors! Debs from 'Eggucation' visited us with her three pet hens, 'Cindy Pom-Pom', 'Repecca' and 'Inky'. We got the chance to pet them and feed them and find out more about how to look after chicks. We came up with lots of questions to ask Debs such as "How does the chick breath inside the egg?" and "How does the egg crack?" We even got a special treat because 'Cindy Pom-Pom' laid an egg for us whilst she was at school!

We found out about which animals hatch from eggs and some of the information really surprised us! Did you know sharks come from eggs!?

Debs left us with an incubator full of eggs to take care of until they hatch in 21 days! We cant wait!

Alien Party Day!

Our 'Space' topic came to an end with a fantastic 'Alien Party Day'! We were very busy on the days leading up to it planning our party, writing lists, invitations and making decorations! We decided we wanted Space themed food and decorated 'Alien Gingerbread men', made 'Alien Eyeball buns' and 'Mars Pizzas'! We used this experience to learn all about recipes and wrote lists of ingredients and instructions to create a class book based on our alien recipes.

The children (and parents) worked really hard to create alien costumes for their home learning activity this term and the costumes were excellent!

It was a fantastic day and we all had lots of fun!

Check out our alien outfits!

Electro City Workshop

We had an amazing afternoon at the 'Electro City Workshop'! We had never seen so much Lego in our entire lives!

We each got to construct a Lego building and then investigated circuits to light up each of our buildings with a light bulb and a switch. It complimented our topic well and the discussions we have had about light and dark.

Music

We were very lucky to have Mrs Csorba down in Foundation to share some of her musical talent! We had so much fun learning new songs and how to follow a written beat by saying 'taa' for a single beat and 'taté' for a double beat. This then transferred into reading musical notes and playing instruments to the same beat! We also played a fun singing game where the person in the middle of the circle had to listen carefully and determine who had sang the tune. It really helped us to practise our listening skills and distinguish between different sounds!

Excel

We had great fun taking part in a demo martial arts session by Excel. Jack from 'Excel' taught us some great moves and about how to respect ourselves and others. Zak and Conor who already attend Excel classes impressed us with their skills by helping jack out with some of the routines!

We even had time for a quick game afterwards, but no one was quick enough or quiet enough to sneak up on Jack!

Safer Internet Day

On the 7th February we celebrated 'Safer Internet Day'. We discussed the positive uses of the internet and raised awareness of some of the risks through the story 'Smartie the Penguin'. We learnt a song about how to stay safe and the message to always tell an adult if you see something you are unsure of. We then made penguin masks and models!

Playground Playmates Award!

Cherry have has won the 'Playground Playmates Award of the Week!'

This award is for outstanding behaviour during lunchtime, excellent manners and for demonstrating fantastic friendships! Well Done!

3D Shape

We have been investigation 3D shape this half term. We went on a 3D shape hunt in out outdoor area and found loads of shapes! It really helped us to practise using the correct language!

The Good Samaritan

During our learning we have continued to focus on our value of 'Compassion'. We found evidence of this value in one of our topic books 'Beegu'. You can watch it here if you have never heard this story before: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=no5Sf0MfMZw

The poor alien called Beegu crash landed on Earth. All alone, she tried to find friends but no-one would talk to her. She eventually came across some 'Little Earth Creatures' (children) who were kind and friendly. They made her happy. Sadly, the 'Big Earth Creatures' (adults) were not as kind. At the end of the book Beegu finally becomes reunited with her family and she tells them all about the creatures who were kind to her. We discussed feelings a lot throughout this book and how the actions of others had made Beegu feel. We also linked this to ourselves and thought about how we would react.

To follow on from this we explored the story of 'The Good Samaritan'. We read the story, talked about what happened and made links to our value of compassion. We also made links to Beegu and our own feelings about being hurt. We acted out the story and practised what we would say if we were the different people in the story.

Sense of Place

We tried to help our alien friend 'Zig' to understand where he had crashed. It was a good opportunity for us to explore our own idea of where we are in the world. We also created maps to show our route to school.

Space!

Our 'Space' topic got off to a very interesting start with a discovery in our playground...

Space Dome!

As a pre-learning activity in preparation for our new topic of 'Space' we had the opportunity to visit the 'Space Dome' in the hall. It was an amazing experience to see all the stars and planets and zoom in closer to experience them in greater detail. We also learnt lots of interesting facts to explore further when we start our topic next term!

Christmas Parties!

We had great fun during our Christmas Party! All the children must have been very good this year because we went to visit Santa and he gave everyone a present! We even had the chance to ask him some questions like, 'How do you bring presents if there is no chimney?'

We had some delicious party food (courtesy of MPG - thank you!) and we played lots of party games like 'Pass the Parcel' and 'Musical Statues' and then finished off with a good old dance in the hall.

Nativity!

We worked really hard to perfect our Christmas play, the 'Angel Express!' and it was a roaring success! The children did an amazing job of remembering all the songs and actions, speaking parts and when to enter and exit the stage. We couldn't have been prouder! Well done Foundation Stage 2! Hollywood is calling!

Scroll through the pictures to meet the cast!

Elf on the Shelf!

This year we have been visited by a very cheeky Christmas Elf! He has been getting up to all sorts of mischief in our classroom overnight! We gave him the name 'Bob Bauble Goodelf' and practised our phonic skills by keeping a diary to record his activities. We also tracked where he had been on a map of our classroom.

St Mark's Church

As part of our learning about 'The Christmas Story' we were lucky enough to go on a visit to St. Mark's Church. We had a great afternoon learning about 'Christingles', the Nativity story and seeing the wonderfully decorated Christmas trees by the local community. Some lucky children also chance to dress up as characters from the Nativity.

The Gingerbread Man

As part of our 'Traditional Tales' topic we learnt the story of 'The Gingerbread Man'. We loved retelling the story, sequencing the events, writing speech bubbles, but more than all that we loved making them and eating them!

We wrote lists of the ingredients we would need and followed the instructions to make them. Luckily for us, none tried to run off before we ate them!

Friendship and Anti Bullying Week

We were blown away by the visit from Excel Martial Arts as part of our 'Anti Bullying Week'. Adam talked about how to respect ourselves and others. We joined in with the moves and then watched in awe as Adam showed us some of his moves!

Zak from our class was brave enough to stand up and show everyone what he has learnt at Excel. We were so impressed!

As part of this week we also did some P4C to explore what makes us special and how to be good friends. We read the story 'Something Else' and thought about what was special about us to make us 'Something Else', we looked at how we were similar and different and learnt some partner and team games such as clapping rhymes and 'Snap!'

Children In Need Day

We had an action packed day to raise money for 'Children in Need'. Throughout the day we moved around different activities that each year group had designed. We were exhausted by the end of it but it was lots of fun!

Bear on the loose!

Our 'Traditional Tales' topic got off to an interesting start when we discovered a huge footprint in our classroom! We had our suspicions that it might be from a bear because some of our porridge had been eaten too! We decided to go on a bear hunt around the school grounds and we found loads of clues, including broken branches, fur and a giant bear poo!

We practised our writing skills by writing descriptions of bears so people could keep a look out. Watch out!

Farmer's Market!

We had great fun designing and making our product for the 'Farmer's Market'! We decided to make delicious hot chocolate cones, complete with chocolate chips, marshmallows and a chocolate covered stirring spoon! It was a great way to practise our maths skills because we had to count 4 spoonful's of hot chocolate powder, 3 spoonful's of chocolate chips and then 30 marshmallows into every cone!

We also practised our colour mixing skills to mix oranges, browns and purples to create our harvest themed tags and then made posters to advertise our product. It was a very tiring week but we hope you enjoyed them!

Patterns!

We have been learning all about repeated patterns! We practised this using objects, colours and shapes, but then something exciting happened... We found out about the 'Cheeriosaurus!'

We found an article about the 'Cheeriosaurus' in the newspaper - a giant dinosaur that was on the loose in America and was eating all the nations Cheerios! We heard he was heading our way so we decided to make repeated pattern necklaces out of Cheerios, to save some Cheerios for us! We had great fun making them and they were a tasty treat!

Shape Detectives!

We have been learning all about 2D shapes! We have learnt their names and their properties using language such as 'sides, corners, straight and curved'.

We turned into detectives to investigate shapes further and found hundreds all around our outdoor area and inside the classroom! It was lots of fun!

Dinosaurs!

We kick started our 'Dinosaur' topic off with a dinosaur hunt, and you'll never guess what we found... A DINOSAUR EGG!

We based our hunt on the story 'Were Going on a Bear Hunt' and created a map of where we would need to go, e.g. through the long wavy grass, around the shed etc. It was great for practising our positional language skills! We decided what we needed to pack to help us on our adventure, packed our bags and off we went! We were very brave!

We took our egg back to the classroom and after a few days it hatched! A baby dinosaur called 'Ali' the Allosaurus was born! We have taken very good care of him!

Playground Playmates Award!

At the end of their first full week at school, Cherry Class have done themselves proud by winning the 'Playground Playmates Award of the Week!'

This award is for outstanding behaviour during lunchtime, excellent manners and for demonstrating fantastic friendships! I am so proud that just a couple of weeks into the term Cherry Class are showing the rest of the school what great role models they are! Well Done!

Amazing Architects!

The children have shown their talents for becoming the next generation of designers, architects and builders with their fantastic creations in the outdoor 'Construction Area' this week! They have worked really well to develop their team work skills and take account of one another's ideas to create these constructions that include trains, cars, pirate ships...!

Rules and Routines

Over these first couple of weeks we have been focussing on establishing all the rules and routines that the children need to feel confident with in order to access their learning successfully. They are now much more confident within their surroundings, the lunchtime routine, snack time, how to access resources independently within the classroom provision and learning behaviour expectations during taught sessions.

The children helped to decide on the behaviours they wanted to see in our classroom to ensure it is a happy, pleasant place to learn, and the behaviours that they didn't want to see to create our 'Class Contract'. They all placed their hand print on it to show their ownership over it.

Off to a Great Start!

The children have made a fantastic start to the new year! They have settled in really well and had heaps of fun on their taster days!
